Synopsis:  Nolan doesn't see darkness when he closes his eyes. Instead, he’s transported into the mind of Amara, a girl living in a different world. Nolan’s life in his small Arizona town is full of history tests, family tension, and laundry; his parents think he has epilepsy, judging from his frequent blackouts. Amara’s world is full of magic and danger--she’s a mute servant girl who’s tasked with protecting a renegade princess. Nolan is only an observer in Amara's world--until he learns to control her. At first, Amara is terrified. Then, she's furious. But to keep the princess--and themselves--alive, they'll have to work together and discover the truth behind their connection.
A fascinating premise, clearly and compellingly written and imagined by a startlingly original debut writer.

My Thoughts:

I know it is cliche to say, but this book really did have me guessing right from the first page. By now, I'm used to books starting off slow to build characters and setting but this book grasped me right from the first page. Nolan was wishing he could just curl up into bed and see the inside of his eyelids...but then he goes on to explain that he hasn't seen the inside of his eyelids for years. Instead, when he closes his eyes, he sees the life of a girl named Amara.

At first, I thought the back and forth of these two main characters (who are supposedly one) would be hard to follow or somewhat confusing at times, but Duyvis pulled everything off perfectly. This may even land a spot on my Top 10 Books of 2014! I enjoyed this book so much and recommend it to anybody looking for a type of book that is a little out of the ordinary.
